Craft Consultant! New Episodes now on TikTok

It’s back babbbby! I asked you on TikTok for your burning craft questions and I’ve already gotten way more interest than I ever did on Instagram so here we are with a new round of Craft Consultant!

If you haven’t seen this series already then it's pretty simple, you submit your burning craft questions either right here at emilymakesstuff.com using the contact form or on social media! What kind of questions? Literally anything related to crafts. Whats my favorite material, what was the hardest project I've worked on, what type of glue is the best, where do I shop for fabrics, etc. It's kind of like that episode of Parks and Rec where Ron goes on Joan's show and he's supposed to be answering questions about the park but then he's like ask me about any of my hobbies: woodworking, fishing. It's like that! Ask me about crafts, wholesale, lines sheets, retail, house plants, dogs, New Orleans, whatever!

This started as a fun IGTV project and it’s now something I'm sharing on TikTok, YouTube & now on my website so you can find it on whatever platform you like best!

“I’m getting married next month and I am at a loss for a card box. I know I want to make it but I’m at a loss.”

After spending some time on Pinterest using various keywords I’ve come up with a few ideas for you. So first things first I like to come at projects with the mindset of using this item for multiple purposes. I don’t want you to be stuck with a lot of wedding decor that you wouldn’t want in your home and has to be thrown out as soon as the wedding party is over. I also like to source things from the thrift store as often as possible.

Next I want to say I don’t know anything about the style or theme of your wedding if you have one so I know not all of these ideas will be a fit but I hope at the very least this will spark some creative ideas for you!

My first idea is to go the route of a vintage letterbox or mail organizer. This can lean towards a couple of different styles by making it rustic it can fit in with a farmhouse chic look. You could paint it bright pops of color to fit with a more spring time kitschy retro look. You could find something antique to fit into a classic wedding. This is also something very easy to fit into home decor by using it to sort your mail or putting it on a porch as a funky planter box.

The other option is to see what interesting item you could upcycle from the thrift store. You could go the route of a basket or you could find a really cool suitcase or a globe and cut a slot in it for envelopes. Although with that idea I think you would have to bust open the globe at the end like a piñata. Better yet you could purchase this globe card box from Etsy! Also, maybe a piñata depending on your vibe?? There is a company called confetti systems that makes these amazing geometric metallic fringe piñatas and that is such a vibe if you’re going for a sparkly disco look.

No matter what item fits into your theme I really love the idea of an object that can add to your decor and would be something to have in your home as a memento of your wedding celebration.

And while we’re talking about random objects I love the idea of a vintage birdcage. This definitely would fit into a spring garden party theme wedding. I’ve seen gorgeous photos of people using these as planters in their home so that would be a lovely use of it after.

If there is a special location that is meaningful to you then a miniature building would be such a cute idea. Whether it’s just to symbolize your new home together as a couple or if it’s a replica of where you first met. You could make this from scratch yourself or you could use an existing structure like a doll house or bird house and then paint and decorate it to your taste. If it’s wooden then it should be very easy to cut a slot in the top using a jigsaw.

Something much more simple would be to find an interesting box or vessel of some sort like this little glass terrarium or wooden tool box and either hand letter directly on it or use mini bunting like the first two images. You could of course also use vinyl letters if you have a cricut or potentially buy the lettering from Etsy as I’m sure there are plenty of options available from makers.

Lastly, I know this idea also falls into the vintage category but I just have so many ideas when it comes to that theme! I think you could do something like this that resembles apothecary drawers or I know it has Christmas ornaments but the cube shelf that looks like vintage office mail slots. Again, this idea is really coming from the perspective of an item that can both show off your personal style and be something you want to keep after.

And with any of these ideas I would suggest having a couple of blank envelopes in there to visually show folks that it’s where they should also put cards.

I hope this has sparked your imagination!
